Introduction to Photography
As an introduction to photography, you can treat the camera as an optical system. Yes, the camera is an optical system with of course the added human element which controls this optical system. Still this is common-sense but since photography is a craft and hobby, the human element is obviously important.
A central component of the system is the lens and the lens has obviously shape and structure. It is the lens which focuses light onto what can be called the image plain. And the distance from the lens to this plain is what is called the focal length. This is a simplistic definition of the focal length. For you can ask where on the lens does one measure from and then you ask too where on the image plain. Indeed the focal length is at the center of an important relation between the image plain and the lens. One can ask then what is the normal focal length for an ordinary family portrait? You may ask this question too. Do camera manufacturers establish focal length as a key element in the design and manufacture of a camera? This is another important question.
One can say, in another way that the purpose of the lens is to converge light. This time the word ‘converge’ is used. There is, I think, a distinction between ‘focus’ and ‘converge’. Re: convex lens in particular, it is rays of light that are being converged. Converge may connote an orderly bringing together of light so that an image is formed. ‘Converge’ may also be more suitable when discussing ‘light’. Light is something intangible and in some way naturally mysterious so that a word like ‘converge’ may be more suitable. When you use the word ‘focus’, it perhaps hints that the lens has some sort of strength and natural power. The lens thus ‘knows’ what to focus. Where on the plain should the light be focussed anyway. When you focus light, you want a specific location. And this is a singular and important point in understanding the function of the lens. Yes the term ‘focus’ may be suitable in the extent that light is directed to a specific point or location. And then one may ask what is this location? Is this location the image? The so-called ‘location’ just needs to be photographically developed so that an image is formed. These are key questions in the nature of an optical system which is the camera. I hope to write a sequence of articles on photography and thus image development re: photography. At the end above, you can ask then how the image is developed? When creating an image, should focal length be considered and how can focal length be controlled. Focal length is at the center of a distinct and significant relationship between the image plain and the lens.
Lenses are used thus to focus or converge light and both these terms are suitable in a way. There is no mention in this article about the shape and structure of the lens. You can ask is the lens something three dimensional? Does light pass ‘through’ the lens? Also , in saying that a lens focusses light, this seems to specifically refer to convex lens. These are important questions too. And the lens, of course, focuses or converges light and in a way, the term ‘control’ can be used. Perhaps you can say that a lens controls ‘light’. However perhaps again, it is better to avoid using the term ‘control’ since a beginner photographer can’t obviously control the lens.
Still, on the camera, there is what is called the shutter and the shutter can be manually controlled. The shutter’s function is to regulate the amount of light that enters the camera body or optical system. Note the term ‘regulate’. The focussing of light is something different to the regulation of light which is the function of the shutter; And what exactly is being regulated? How indeed can you regulate the amount of light that enters an optical system and does this affect the focal length? Some images require that light be regulated through use of the shutter. Still the lens still has to converge the light. Another question then is whether the lens can actually be controlled in a manual way so that again the image that you want is photographically formed. Really light is something mysterious and intangible and the regulation and control of light is a whole area; a science and an art.
Photography Portfolios
Photography portfolios compile an individual’s best photographs, depicting various moods and themes and reflecting the photographer’s taste. Photography portfolios can be very impressive and interesting to view. They help the photographers to win acknowledgment and fame. The photographs included in the portfolio reflect the technical and artistic skills of the photographer, along with his understanding of photography. Photography portfolios can be crucial in deciding the business prospective of the photographs and establishing the photographer’s position. Photography is an art and can be best demonstrated through a photography portfolio.
A photography portfolio may include photographs of wildlife, nature, travel, sports, and leisure. Only the best photographs with the perfect blend of the technical aspects and artistic vision should be included in the portfolios. It is very important to edit and compile the photographs. It is essential for creating long lasting impressions. An impressive photography portfolio can win awards and recognition at various competitions or might even mark the beginning of a successful career in photography. The photographs can be presented both on online and at local galleries for exhibition and marketing purposes.
The complete profile of the artist, including individual collections, is categorized according to the subject. Online galleries display unique combinations of photography, and amateur and professional photographers can showcase their work with the help of these online services. Some websites even display the best photography portfolio of the month. This serves as an ideal way for a photographer to advertise and market his or her work. Interested persons can buy from these collections, which help the photographers to reach potential clients.
Digital Stock Photography
The term “digital photographs” means photographs that can be viewed on a computer screen, mobile phones and Palmtops. Digital photographs have changed the way stock photographs are sold and distributed. Digital photographs are captured using a digital camera that is synchronized to a computer. Varieties of special effects are applied to digitally the formatted image. These photographs can be copied to CD’s, printed on paper, sent by e-mail or downloaded from a web site. Photographers submit these images to stock photo agencies or represent themselves by launching their own website. Digital Stock Photographs can be obtained directly from websites, stock photo agencies or directly from stock photographers. Digital stock photographs are widely used by advertisers, television commercials, web designers, calendars and greeting cards companies.
Digital stock photography is filed under different categories, so that photographs can be searched easily according to different categories. Digital stock photographs are most often of nature scenes, celebrities or wildlife, but the categories are virtually endless and the list is growing all the time. A customer can receive photographs by electronic delivery, thus reducing the delivery cost and time.
Some stock photography is free of copyrights, which means nobody owns the rights. Therefore, this kind of stock photography can be utilized for free by anyone for any purpose. They are not as in demand, though, as copyrighted works. Digital stock photography added new dimensions to stock photographs in the way that they are captured, displayed, marketed sold and distributed. The demand for digital photography is great and the future is bright.
Digital Cameras
But perhaps no product has been more affected by digital technology than the camera.
Although it may seem like digital cameras are a recent phenomenon, the first digital camera available on the U.S. market was released by Kodak some 15 years ago. The DCS-100 had 1.3 megapixels, which are units of graphical resolution digital cameras use to display data, at a less-than-reasonable price of $13,000.
Fifteen years of advancement in digital camera technology has not only increased the number of megapixels for entry-level digital cameras—it’s hard to find a digital camera with fewer than three megapixels—but brought the cost of digital cameras down to far more reasonable prices (under $80 at some stores).
And thanks to the storage capability of digital cameras—perhaps the biggest advantage to digital camera technology—users can view photos on an array of outlets like the camera itself, a computer monitor, on web pages or on paper after developing them on printers. Some digital cameras, or autonomous devices, have rendered computers obsolete. Through the camera’s USB port, the camera can connect directly to printers to develop pictures. Even televisions, DVD players, entertainment gaming systems and cell phones are capable of reading and displaying digital images.
But because digital imaging is ubiquitous in its availability, it’s important now more than ever to understand the particulars of digital cameras, the best (and worst) ones to buy and how to take professional-looking pictures.
With the electronic guide, you’ll learn how to do that and much more, including how to avoid being ripped off when buying a digital camera, how much is too much for a digital camera, the three levels of digital photography, and how poor skill can’t be negated by cameras with all the bells and whistles.
Sell Your Travel Photography
Travel photography is not about taking nice snaps that you show to your family and friend. It’s about capturing the character and charm of a location. The following are tips that will help improve your travel photography. If your travel images are good there is no reason why you won’t be able to sell them.
Every year thousands of travel images are destroyed mainly due to the fact that they were not carefully planned and the skills required to take good photography were not used. Sometimes when we are on holidays we may get careless and leave our skills at home. If care and planning is put into your travel shots there is certainly a great chance that they will sell.
To sell your images you need to expose them correctly, and also have good colour and composition. Good colour is always important with travel images.
Every new city or country we travel to will produce a different test. This is mainly due to the strength of light that will differ from region to region. Light will differ from your home and exposure may in some cases be difficult to calculate. Try to get your hands on a grey card. This will help calculate tough exposures and will not cost you much. You place the grey card in front of the subject that you are taking and then take your exposure reading from it.
There are many different things that you can shoot. The following are the main subjects that you should take.
Cityscape portraits and landscape shots are the most popular topic, but this means getting up early in the morning. You need to plan carefully and arrive at your destination before most tourists do. Other important subjects are local people, food and drink, buildings and stores and road signs. Portraits of local people in national dress will also sell well.
There are many places to sell your images once you return from your trip. If you have a large amount of images it may be better to get a stock photography agency to sell them for you. This will save you a lot of time but the agency will take up to fifty percent of the sale price.
Regardless of what percentage they take, stock agencies are the best way. The will have a list of paying customers on their books. They will know which market best suits your images. They will also know the correct prices to charge.
There are thousands of agencies out there - be careful with your choice. If possible try and pick one of the bigger agencies. Your images will get a lot more exposure and make your travel photography more profitable.
There are many great photographers who make their living from travel photography. They travel from place to place capturing the character of each location they visit. There is no reason why you can’t do the same. Every year image publishers are always on the lookout for unique imagery. They will pay good money to secure rights for the image - so it is worthwhile giving it a go.
